The Bayou-torium @ Yolanda Black Navarro Nature Park 2021
The Bio-Art Bayou-torium's bilingual, social practice, bio-art project shipment container will move to the Yolanda Black Navarro/Buffalo Bend Nature Park in the Fall of 2021. Its mission is to bring an aesthetic and educational art experience to cultivate stewardship of the Bayou among our bilingual and Spanish-speaking residents of the East End. Weekend series of free activities include: nature tour with experienced guides; animal care-givers and bird watchers; artists creating pigments from plants and performance; farmer and horticulturalist classes with natural science drawing and painting; microscopy observations; art classes identifying the shapes of birds in flight and of nature. Free and open to all ages.
The Bayou-torium coordinates with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership (BBP) and Harris County, Precinct 2 Parks Department at the site to schedule 3 weekends of programs from September 25-Oct. 17, 2021. A variety of activities and tours will be scheduled each weekend and early evenings. During school hour-weekdays, the Bayou-torium is open to schedule field trips with local schools. Artists working in the fields of bio-art, socially engaged practices, drawing and painting will be hired and encouraged to collaborate on specific programs and events. Each will be paid an artist fee. Hired tour guides will conduct new excursions around the nature-park and Bayou. Collaborations with bayou/nature preservation organizations will be invited for their expertise and tour related events. All events, collaborators and hired assistants are bi-lingual or have interpreters on hand to serve our Spanish-speaking neighbors and visitors. All events and programs are free, open to all ages, for all Houstonians.
